Природа не была милостива к России. В большей части европейской части России и Сибири очень холодно большую часть года. В старой России, люди мало что могли делать в зимние месяцы. А весной надо было очень много сделать в короткое время. Это объясняет, почему русские часто неактивны длительные периоды, а потом у них всплески энергии. Суровый климат объясняет русскую силу, способность преодолевать трудности с терпением и покорностью. Климат также сделал их осторожными.
Суровый климат, жестокая история и скептический взгляд заставил русских ценить стабильность, безопасность, общественный порядок и предсказуемость, чтобы избегать риски.
Чтобы понять русских, надо знать, откуда они произошли.

A lot of Russian national traits are influenced by its geography as well as history.
- Russians have willingness to cooperate, act as a community rather than individuals. This takes its root in the communal foundations of village life in tsarist Russia. Probably because of it Russians have a reputation of being hospitable and friendly to strangers and giving their guests a warm welcome. They can take in strangers and share food with them, and it's considered rude to come empty-handed when visiting someone else's house.
- They have an optimistic outlook in spite of the foreigners' opinion about Russians' gloominess and seriousness which is often just a state of mind that helps us cope with hard work and cold weather. No wonder people living in the South of Russia tend to be more flamboyant and funny than those in regions with severe winters.
- Roughly half of Russia's population has household plots and spend time gardening (predominantly in the south-west). During the communist period school children had to visit their local farms to harvest food at a time when about 90% of the nation's food came from dacha gardens. Now there are much fewer gardeners but all the same many cities have small corner shops selling locally grown food.
- Many people spend their holidays at the seaside. For this purpose they go to Sochi, Anapa, Crimea and other tourist places on the coast of the Black Sea.
- The country's vast territory has low temperatures throughout most of the year making people do little in winter and stay inactive and pull themselves together and start to work hard in spring. So Russians are truly patient and hard-working and energetic when necessary.
- Beside their harsh climate, they have hard history. Over 75 percent of the country worked the land as peasants. A million Russians died in Leningrad rather than surrendering to the Nazis in World War II. Almost every Russian living today has a relative who served time in prison or the Gulag during the Stalinist years. Russia lost millions of men in WW2 leaving wives and children back home without husbands and fathers. It results in Russians being tough, reluctant to take risks and able to overcome hardships.
- However, Russian peasants were loyal to the tsar, humble before their landlord and very religious that explains Russians' submission and being good Christians.

- Русские имеют желание сотрудничать, действовать как сообщество, а не по отдельности. Это укоренилось в общинных основах деревенской жизни в царской России. Вероятно, поэтому у россиян - репутация гостеприимных и дружелюбных по отношению к незнакомцам людей, тепло встречающих гостей. Они могут пускать в дом незнакомцев и делиться с ними едой, и считается грубым приходить с пустыми руками в гости.
- У них оптимистичный взгляд, несмотря на мнение иностранцев о мрачности и серьезности россиян, что часто является просто душевным состоянием, которое помогает нам справляться с тяжелой работой и холодной погодой. Неудивительно, что люди, живущие на юге России, обычно более эпатажные и веселые, чем в регионах с суровыми зимами.

- Помимо сурового климата, у них тяжелая история. Более 75 процентов страны обрабатывали землю как крестьяне. Миллион россиян погибло в Ленинграде, а не сдалось нацистам во Второй мировой войне. Почти у каждого россиянина, живущего сегодня, есть родственник, который отбывал срок в тюрьме или в ГУЛАГе в сталинские годы. Россия потеряла миллионы мужчин во время Второй мировой войны, оставив жен и детей дома без мужей и отцов. Это приводит к тому, что россияне суровы, не любят рисковать и способны преодолевать трудности.
- Однако русские крестьяне были верны царю, скромны перед своим помещиком и очень религиозны, что объясняет покорность русских и то, что они хорошие христиане.

In my opinion, the notion «national character» means that a person has the peculiarities in character and behavior, which are peculiar only for his culture and traditions. Every nation has its own distinctive features.
