Hi! I’m ... I invite you to join us on our exciting literary tour around Britain.
If you are interested in places associated with a particular author, the British Isles are a reader’s dream. You can always find a town, a city or a piece of country connected with a famous writer. Great Britain is the birthplace of such writers as William Shakespeare, Charles Dickens, Walter Scott, Robert Louis Stevenson and many others.
Now, welcome to London, the capital of the UK. Many famous writers made London their home. Some of their homes are open to the public. The Charles Dickens Museum welcomes visitors from all over the world. On four floors, visitors can see paintings, books and many items relating to the life of one of the most popular authors. In London, you will have the chance to visit the Globe Theatre and watch Shakespeare’s plays there.
Then we travel to explore Oxford. Oxford University’s list of former students reads like a writers’ who’s who: Clive Staples Lewis (author of the all-time classic The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe), John Ronald Reuel Tolkien (author of The Lord of the Rings) and many others. You’ll also see where Tolkien and Lewis met to discuss their fabulous tales. Oxford was also the setting for Lewis Carroll’s Alice in Wonderland. You’ll see where Alice went through the small door into Wonderland, find a dodo and many other interesting things on our Alice in Wonderland walk. Tolkien had Britain in mind when writing The Lord of the Rings. The settings in the Oxford area have inspired the settings in his books. In Oxford, you’ll be able to visit Christchurch College. Many of the scenes in the Harry Potter films were shot in various places around it. You’ll be able to have your own picture taken in Hogwarts Hall.
We continue our literary explorations with Buckinghamshire. You can visit the Roald Dahl Museum in Buckinghamshire. Here you can discover more about Dahl’s life and work. You can listen to a story, watch videos or just read your favourite Dahl’s book.
Then we travel to the historic town of Stratford-upon-Avon, known as William Shakespeare’s birthplace. А visit to Stratford-upon-Avon will tell you everything you ever wanted to know about Shakespeare.
In South West Scotland you can follow the story of Robert Burns, the great Scottish poet. He was born in Alloway in 1759. Scots the world over celebrate his birthday every year on the 25th January. Then to Edinburgh — the home and classroom of many writers. You can visit the birthplace of Walter Scott, Robert Louis Stevenson and Arthur Conan Doyle. You can also visit Edinburgh castle, hear tales of Robert Louis Stevenson or hear Joanne Rowling read extracts from her next Harry Potter book. If you have the time and the interest, then why not add a day to your tour and visit Sir Walter Scott’s home — Abbotsford. Walter Scott had an impressive collection of books in his library.
