The Proms are very old. The first Proms concert took place on 10 August, 1895. Its original aim was to offer classical music to as many people as possible. It was the idea of Robert Newman, the manager of the Queen’s Hall in London. While Newman had organised symphony orchestra concerts at the hall, his aim was to reach more people by offering more popular programmes and a less formal behaviour and keeping ticket prices very low. The concerts are called the Promenade concerts because the people can stand or walk during the performance. Once in the spring of 1894, Newman invited Henry Wood to the Queen’s Hall to talk about the project. Henry Wood was a well-known musician and a popular conductor. “I am going to hold the concerts to train the people who come to listen to some good music and to create a new atmosphere for it. I want to teach people to love and to listen to classical and modern music,” said Newman. In February 1894, Newman offered Wood the job of the conductor of the Queen’s Hall orchestra and of the first Proms season. The concert series was known as “Mr Robert Newman’s Promenade Concerts” and the programmes were very successful. Henry Wood introduced to the Proms many famous composers and some of the best musicians. He conducted the proms for 50 years. His last concert was on 28 July, 1944. He died three weeks later but the Proms didn’t die. They continued into the second half of the century and into the third millennium with outstanding British musicians. Now they include over 70 concerts every year. The Proms continue to welcome popular international performers. Today you can hear every Prom on the radio and almost every Prom can now be heard on the Proms website for a week after the concert.
